The noise that was in the track before the singer springs into action is now gone. Note that the threshold has to be chosen carefully. If it's too low, there is the danger of some noise coming through, if it's too high, the gate might cut out relevant audio signals. You have to find the right value by trial and error.

What about the other parameters? Just like compressors, gates usually feature attack and release. The attack specifies how long it takes the gate to open. For drums and guitars very short attacks of around 1 ms work just fine. In case of vocals however, such a low value could lead to an overly abrupt end to the silence. To avoid this, choose a value closer to 10 ms for the lead and 50 ms for the backings. Typical values for the release are anywhere between 100 and 300 ms.
